What’s your “I really need a bath, but the baby won’t let go of my legs” trick?

How do you take a bath when your baby is stuck to you?

I've discovered that it's not a great idea to leave my daughters alone together, even for 5 minutes. It's certain that something unexpected (and for me to clean up) will happen. My house is quite secure and I lock the doors in the areas I consider most dangerous.

I've developed a few strategies over the years to help me take a shower really quickly:

0-3 months – Who can take a bath? Am I kidding or not, we all know what it's like to only take a shower when possible!

3-6 months – I used to put a rug on the floor with some toys and music.

6-9 months – When they were able to sit up on their own, I would put the treasure basket on the floor and that would give me a little more time because it is an absolutely spectacular experience.

9-12 – A basket full of books.

From 1 year onwards – I realized how good life was before she could reach the edge of the bathtub and throw toys in (we didn’t have a bathtub when Clara was born so I wasn’t prepared for this reality!!).

I use different materials each time.1  Lily plays with them for a few minutes, before moving on to whatever else catches her attention. I also talk to her, but I prefer to avoid it because it makes her turn her attention to me and inevitably the toys end up in the bathtub with me! I advise you to have materials available that you don't mind getting wet.

  1. I repeat the materials throughout the week, but I alternate between 2 or 3.
